A confidential international technology manufacturer partnered with 3S MEP to provide Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) engineering services for a new advanced manufacturing facility in Illinois (IL). The facility supports battery-related manufacturing operations requiring precise environmental control, robust utility infrastructure, and full compliance with U.S. codes and standards.
3S MEP delivered comprehensive MEP design services to support high-precision industrial manufacturing while ensuring occupant comfort, system reliability, and long-term scalability.
The mechanical scope included detailed thermal load calculations and ventilation analysis in full compliance with the International Mechanical Code (IMC) and ASHRAE standards. All ductwork was routed above the roof deck to maximize usable production floor area while maintaining efficient airflow distribution.
A key design element was the integration of a humidification system to establish a controlled, cleanroom-like environment. Due to PCB assembly and battery-related manufacturing processes, precise humidity and temperature control were critical to maintaining product quality and meeting industrial manufacturing standards. The design also addressed high internal heat loads generated by manufacturing equipment, ensuring thermal comfort without compromising operational efficiency.
As part of the MEP scope, 3S MEP designed a compressed air system tailored to manufacturing requirements. Using the equipment matrix and production layout, a compressed air distribution network was developed to serve two rows of equipment, with provisions for future expansion. Detailed pipe sizing calculations were performed considering pressure drop, pipe length, and airflow demand. A high-performance aluminum compressed air piping system was selected to meet operating pressure and CFM requirements, ensuring reliability and scalability.
Additional plumbing systems included condensate drainage for humidification equipment with properly sized pumps, a water filtration system to protect humidifiers from scaling, and a natural gas piping system serving rooftop units (RTUs), all designed in compliance with applicable codes.
The electrical design included a comprehensive lighting layout developed using Visual Lighting software to meet performance and code requirements. Lighting controls were designed in compliance with IECC requirements to support energy-efficient operation.
Power distribution systems were designed to serve all manufacturing equipment in accordance with NEC requirements and equipment specifications. Electrical drawings included circuiting, overcurrent protection, conductor ampacity, and voltage drop calculations. All systems were coordinated to ensure code compliance and reliable operation.
